A History of Golf in the High Country

In a recent article in the Watauga Democrat, Harris Prevost gives us a glimpse into the history and availability of golf throughout the North Carolina mountains including interesting tidbits about the men who envisioned both golf courses and a myriad of recreational facilities throughout the area from the beginning.

In his article, entitled Golf In the High Country: Not a ‘good walked spoiled’,  Prevost gives an overview and engaging commentary for each the 17 golf courses (or 315 holes) that golfers can enjoy throughout Ashe, Watauga, and Avery counties. Public courses include: Jefferson Landing, Mountain Aire Golf Club, Boone Golf Club, Willow Creek, Sugar Mountain Club, Mountain Glen Golf Club, and Linville Harbor. Private clubs include: Blowing Rock Country Club, Hound Ears Club, Beech Mountain Club, and Linville Ridge.

The article begins with public courses and proceeds to private courses like our own Beech Mountain Club which require membership or being invited as a guest to enjoy.
